Trivia and In-Jokes

About the Story:
This was originally written for V. Secundus is one of her stories written for National Novel Writing Month (also known as NaNoWriMo) and AL just one day up and decided she wanted to be a part of the universe. This is an alternate version of AL who never met the Doctor during the war on Alnilam that killed her family. Instead of getting amnesia from the attack, she went Creative instead.
My biggest issue with writing this damned thing is I can’t seem to write for Victor! Since this is a Secundus-based story, in my mind it needed to be written in Victor’s perspective. However, minus the whole one-or-two times I watched Corpse Bride, my only exposure to Victor is V’s boys and stories, which is why I re-read Secundus like a gazillion times and yet Victor in my story doesn’t have a lot of speaking parts. I bounced back and forth with making this in Victor’s POV and in AL’s POV and I tried my damndest. Most of the story was written during lunch at work and written kind of hastily. To be honest, ’til AL shows up, I think it’s a bit choppy.
This ficlet happens sometime between Chapter Eight and Chapter Thirteen.

Story:
Derpy: V had already established that the ponies of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic have a home in Secundus (Equestria Labs to be precise) so I decided to give my second favorite pony a cameo (first favorite is Twilight). “Ditzy Doo” was supposed to be her name but the show runners decided to keep the nickname of Derpy as a nod to the fans. Her first speaking roll was in “The Last Roundup” and she was originally namedropped but fan outcry from the voice she was given had them remove the name and had her voice changed. Derpy here has her original voice (YouTube it). The mention that she’s mistaken for a male is a nod to the fact that Tabitha St. Germain originally wasn’t aware she was supposed to be female and voiced her with a neighbor’s son in mind.

Itchie: My real-life dog. The cataract is really a corneal edema but I didn’t know that at the time of writing. She really was named after Itchy from All Dogs Go to Heaven (except when I got her I forgot that Itchy was brown and not black and tan).

The hay bunker: The construction that Goldy and the horses eat out of is a real thing used at the barn I keep my own horse at. As AL is only one person, instead of bringing the bunker to the hay she brings hay to the bunker with Goldy’s help. The cart is based off a real thing at the barn, too.

The equines: Goldy (Golden Mun to everyone else) is the reason AL is immortal. During the war on Alnilam, his blood mixed with AL’s and since the unicorns I created are immortal naturally, that trait passed to AL (as she doesn’t mention the immortality here, it’s possible this didn’t happen in this universe). The brown horse with black mane and tail and white on its back legs is my horse, Shada. The other two are meant to be Cuatro and Dragonfire; the former is my old guide horse from the barn I keep Shada at and the latter is a mare I’d ridden before I got Shada. Dragonfire isn’t her real name but what I started calling her; it’s the title of a Doctor Who episode. Goldy speaks with an accent because he’s not an Alnilam unicorn and normally speaks telepathically.

Adam Steel: Adam is “What Could Have Been” to the show called VR Troopers. Saban originally conceived the show as a vehicle for Jason David Frank called Cybertron. However, the runaway popularity of his Power Rangers character Tommy led to their keeping him on MMPR and recasting the role in VRT. Brad Hawkins instead took the roll of Ryan Steele (one of AL’s guys in the “prime” universe) and Cybertron became VR Troopers. You can find a pilot presentation for Cybertron on YouTube here. Since this is an alternate universe I decided to use an alternate version of AL’s guys.

Fluffy: A cat I had in real life, long since passed. In her memory, she has a permanent home with AL in Secundus here and on Alnilam in the “prime” universe.

AL’s powers: Shape shifting and healing are the only two powers AL was born with that were nullified by her going Creative. Although she wasn’t born with the invisibility, somehow she managed to keep that. Maybe it was a subconscious thing to help keep the wings hidden.
