Chapter Eight: Resolved

Cesar was at Lisa’s door the very next morning. It was a stark contrast in regards to the day they arrived. The sun was shining, reflecting off the snow, and the wind was calm. Although it was still below freezing out, it wasn’t as uncomfortable as it had been.

“Did they take care of you?” Lisa asked the horse from an open window, already knowing the answer.

“Yes,” he replied, pawing at the snow. “They were very hospitable.”

“Well, you can find a home out there, then. I’m sure they’ll help.”

“They’ve already started looking for a place for me. They’re very eager.”

Lisa smiled. “Good. And you can come by whenever you want.”

“Thank you, Lisa. Is the Masked One all right?”

“He’s recovering, and he’ll be fine.”

“I’m very glad we found you. I fear what would have happened.”

“Don’t need to worry, now. See you later, Cesar.”

“Goodbye.”

The horse turned and left while Lisa shut the window and raised the heat another notch. Erik was waiting for her on the couch, cradling a cup of tea in his hands to warm them.

“You okay?” she asked as she sat next to him. “Feeling better?”

“Yes…” he said softly. “A little weak, but yes.”

“Well, Medicus said that would happen.”

“This is…all very unusual, Lisa.”

She put her arm around him and rubbed his back. “I know, but I’ll be here to help every step of the way. Jamie, too. And everyone else here. I know you’re not comfortable being around other people, but, remember, no one will judge you by your looks. We don’t care. Understand?”

“Yes…but…”

“I know. You still don’t believe it. Don’t worry. I’ll make it right.”

And, so, she did.
