Chapter Six: Treating the Shock

Erik spent a fitful night, plagued by nightmares. Lisa stayed by his side, holding him and comforting him as the fever dreams caused him to toss and turn.

The medicines she was giving him weren’t quite strong enough to break the fever and could only bring it down for a few hours at a time.

By the time he’d awoken, he was covered in sweat and had a very large headache, along with various body aches. Lisa advised him to take a shower and a pain medicine she had handy.

The medicine and shower seemed to have done him some good, so, she showed him around the house, as the weather was still too nasty to go outside.

She demonstrated all the advances in technology, from the electric lights to the computer, the refrigerator and stove. It was a lot to take in, but he seemed to handle it pretty well.

“I want to introduce you to someone,” said Lisa. “He’s my Kinsellan flit, Rising Fog. Don’t be afraid. He won’t hurt you. He lives here with me.”

Jamie, she sent, come on.

The flit flew out of Lisa’s bedroom and landed on the back of the couch.

“Jamie, this is Erik. Erik, Rising Fog.” Her mind told him that she was the only one allowed to call him Jamie.

Greetings, Erik, he said.

“Hello…what, exactly, are you?”

I am a Kinsellan flit, as Lisa told you. I am an Empath, meaning I can sense feelings from others.

“He and I are bonded, almost like you and I are linked,” said Lisa. “You’re going to need your rest, so just relax until Medicus comes back. Remember, I made a vow to make your life better when I first met you, and I’ll still do that. Anything you need, I’ll try to help. All you have to do is ask.”

He simply looked at her, his face unreadable.

“You came to me, remember.”

“I did not expect…”

“Yeah, I know. It’s something called ‘future shock’. Plus, you’re sick. I’m going to tell you, though, that no one here cares what you look like. If you want to leave the mask on, that’s fine, but you don’t need it.”

The look in his eyes told her that he did.
