Trivia and In-Jokes
About the Story:
The beginning of what is going to be The New Jedi Academy series. My own version
of Luke’s Jedi Academy and the shenanigans therein. Currently the individual
stories have no titles because brain no brain-ing. This story takes place
immediately after Return of the Jedi and immediately after my fic “The
Promise”. I may have borrowed a few things from Truce at Bakura, but I’m
twisting them for my purposes.
Chapter One:
The ride up to the Fleet:
The presence of AL gives Luke an excuse not to talk about the folks
wanting to know what happened on the Death Star II, unlike in Truce at Bakura.
I know. You’re Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight: In Truce at Bakura, Luke needs to know what’s going on that’s alarming everyone. Here, he most certainly does not.
a medical bed emerge from the wall: Yes, it’s from Truce at Bakura but Star Trek does it, too.
electrical field: From Truce at Bakura, but how else would you describe Force lightning?
the longest day of his life: From Truce at Bakura.
the alternative is bacta immersion: Yeah, that and Luke’s dislike of the sticky tank is from Truce at Bakura.
The condition will become chronic unless: Truce at Bakura.
Chapter Two:
Even Obi-Wan and Yoda had admitted that his relationship made him stronger, not
weaker.:
Some unseen (and unwritten by me thus far) scenes from the Classic Trilogy.
Chapter Three:
He felt as if his entire skeleton had been removed and now the bones were
growing back from scratch.:
Borrowed from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I do not support
the TERF in any way, but I still like the stories.
For a moment, he felt like he was going to revert to his 18-year-old self who whined about power converters: Going back to Luke from A New Hope, though he was supposed to be 19 in that movie. He met AL when he was 18, however.
“Treatment is complete, sir. Now you must rest. Would you like a painkiller?”: While the dialog is from Truce at Bakura, this time Luke doesn’t refuse.
as a Jedi, he was supposed to be able to control sensations: As above.
Lisa had never gotten the hang of understanding binary, but Luke seemed to know what the little droid was saying. Either that, or he was just guessing.: Luke guesses at a translation a couple times in Truce at Bakura.
Chapter Four:
The ancient art of Jedi healing…Yoda’s lessons had been sketchy at best:
Paraphrased from Truce at Bakura.
portable screen: Yes.
Chapter Five:
the Noad system:
This is a reference to how I’ve misheard the Anoat system, the star system
located between Hoth and Bespin. Wookieepedia even redirects if you type it in
the search bar.
her lost healing power: AL lost her healing power when the Doctor died eons ago.
The Force is something you use when it lets you: This is from Truce at Bakura.
Chapter Nine:
pieces of clothing they were trying to get stains out of by beating them with a
rock:
Yeah, I kind of stole this from the movie version of Hairspray with John
Travolta.
Chapter Ten:
one bright spot:
Yes, from Truce at Bakura.
Chapter Eleven:
Bones!:
Venting my own frustration about a broken toe and fractured foot I had gone
through. I shortened the healing time to factor in Star Wars technology.
Chapter Thirteen:
Hills, forests, mountains, caves:
Taken from the description of Ossus from Wookieepedia, even though I’m not
naming the planet the Academy is on in this series.
The mysterious planet: A reference to the Doctor Who serial of the same name.
Chapter Fourteen:
“Credit for them?”:
Stolen from Jo asking the Doctor “Penny for them?” in “Planet of the Daleks”. I
added the “What’s on your mind?” to give a hint it’s the Star Wars
equivalent to “Penny for your thoughts”.
Chapter Sixteen:
“Just resting my eyes,”:
From the Ghostwriter serial “A Crime of Two Cities”.
Chapter Nineteen:
she gently laid his hand on his chest, kissed his lips, then said, “I’ll be
back.”:
Kind of what Leia did for Luke after being rescued at the
end of Empire Strikes Back.
Chapter Twenty:
Togruta, human, Nikto, Whiphid:
The species of the members of the Bear Clan, the group of Jedi initiates we see
in Attack of the Clones when Obi-Wan comes to ask Yoda for help in
finding the planet Kamino.
The Twi’leki language: I got all that from Wookieepedia, and the inspiration came from having seen Project Hail Mary and Grace and Rocky beginning to communicate.
a group of ten students that seemed to range in age from four to eight: How big the Clans of the Jedi initiates were on Coruscant.
Chapter Twenty-One:
“In your opinion…would it be possible for someone not Force-sensitive to learn
how to use a lightsaber?”
He shrugged. “I don’t see why not.”:
Exactly the question I asked and response I got from Mark Hamill when I met him at New
York Comic Con 2017.
Chapter Twenty-Two:
disgruntled grunt:
I believe that was how Homer Simpson’s “D’oh!” was originally described. The
only reason it became the iconic cry it is now is because an under-breath grunt
was hard to animate.
Chapter Twenty-Three:
“I can always count on my sister,” he gestured to the closing door, “and the
woman I love,” he added, glancing at Lisa, “to boost my self-image.”:
I borrowed this exchange from Will Riker and Deanna Troi from the TNG episode
“Thine Own Self”.
“Okay,” he said after a moment. “Help me up.: This I borrowed from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode “Witch”.
Chapter Twenty-Four:
other members of Red, Gray, and Green Squadrons:
I pulled their names off of a website that came up when I Googled “Who survived
the Battle for Endor?” (https://sites.google.com/site/starwarswhoswho/home/whos-who-of-rebel-pilots-of-endor)
What’s in the X-wing’s cargo hold: Taken from Wookieepedia, minus the shelter part.
Roomier than it looks from the outside: Kind of a wink, wink, nudge, nudge to the Doctor’s TARDIS.Back *~*~* Chapter Twenty-Four
