Real Lisa: Hey, all! Lisa, here, authoress of this story,
here to do a running commentary about it. Joining me is my alter ego, Alien
Lisa.
Alien Lisa: Hi.
RL: And Doc and Marty from her universe.
Doc: Hello.
Marty: Heya.
RL: Let’s begin by saying that this story started out as a collaboration between
myself and Flaming Trails, who
requested this commentary. Due to some…stuff…the collab fell through, but I
asked if I could resurrect the story and write it myself. She said yes. This is
a sequel to my previous story,
Dreaming
of You, where AL gets reunited with Doc after…how long was it?
AL: Long. You can’t count in years when you time travel as much as I do. Let’s
just say it spanned the lifetimes of the Doctor, Adam, Tommy and Jesse, plus the
short time I spent with Jack, the time I spent in Brooklyn and the time I
visited Shining Time Station. Plus I met Harry Potter somewhere in there.
Marty: I didn’t know that.
AL: Yeah.
RL: Okey-dokey.
Chapter One: Doc Gives His Thanks
RL: As always, chapters begin with a title.
Doc: Is it easy for you to think up titles?
RL: No way. That’s usually the last thing that comes to mind when I
write.
It was warm. The golden sun shone brightly on the
multicolored grass of the small Alnilam meadow. Two
figures slowly walked hand-in-hand toward edge, where
tri-colored trees marked the start of the forest.
Marty: What’s with the funky formatting?
RL: Dream sequence. I always use centered paragraphs and italicized text for
writing out dreams.
Doc: I remember this dream.
AL: Me, too.
“This is…incredible!” commented one of them,
roving his
liquid-chocolate eyes all around and wishing he had about
eight more in order to take in everything at once. “What
makes the sky lavender?”
Doc: I see you went with the general consensus when it comes
to the appearance of my eyes.
RL: *giggle* What can I say, I’m a Doc’s Girl.
The second shrugged her shoulders, smiling. “Magic.
You
get a lot of it when the majority of the population is, you
know, what they are.” Her wings fluttered as a warm
breeze blew past them, carrying a scent of unfamiliar
flowers. She pointed. “There he is, Doc.”
Standing at the border of the meadow and forest
stood
something rarely – if ever – seen by a human: a unicorn.
RL: The Alnilam unicorns are often featured in my stories. Usually Medicus, the Healer, but, occasionally, someone else will slip in.
He was a tall stallion, standing an easy 18 hands
high from
cloven hooves to blue-furred withers, an equivalent of 6
feet tall, just an inch shorter than Doc himself. His entire
body was different shades of blue, and his long horn
glowed with an inner light and power. Although he looked
quite old – even for a unicorn, a species that is very long-
lived – his bright blue eyes held an undying, youthful
sparkle.
RL: I had to use an online conversion for finding out how high 18 hands is in feet. The fact that Doc is 6’ 1” comes from Christopher Lloyd’s Internet Movie Database entry.
“Great Scott,” Doc whispered, in awe. “Lisa, that’s
a
unicorn!”
The blue stallion whickered, sounding like he was
chuckling, and made a little bow. He said, speaking in
perfect English, “Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Dr.
Brown.” His long beard quivered as he spoke.
Doc’s dark eyes widened. Lisa had to laugh. “Yep,”
she
said. “Almost all of ’em know a lot of languages, human
English being one of them.” She reached out her hand and
stroked the unicorn’s velvety nose, then gently elbowed
Doc in the side. “This is Aislin. He’s the one who made this
possible.”
AL: You know, I don’t think I really ever thanked him
properly.
RL: Heh. Aislin was created when I was still in high school. I was writing a
story for an English class, and that’s when Aislin, Mirage and Antionette came
into the picture. In my defense, I’d like to state that
Babynames.com had “Aislin” listed under
male names. They’ve since changed it to female. Please don’t tell him this.
Others: *chuckle*
The scientist hesitated for the briefest moment,
then
mimicked Lisa in patting Aislin’s nose. The stallion neighed
softly in appreciation.
The barest of whispers escaped Doc’s lips as he
squeezed
Lisa’s hand with his free one. “Thank you…thank you for
bringing her back to me.”
Doc: I remember being very emotional. I thought I’d never
see her again.
AL: You and me both.
Aislin smiled a unicorn smile. “You’re welcome.”
Marty: So, what does a unicorn smile look like?
RL: Uh…
AL: You know how sometimes dogs look like their smiling? It’s kind of like that.
Sort of.
He shut his eyes and Alnilam wavered and disappeared.
End chapter one.
RL: See you in the next chapter!
