Trivia and In-Jokes
About the Story:
Inspiration bites at the oddest of times. Mine came about 3:30 on a Friday
morning. I’d been watching Star Trek: Voyager a lot and, due to a small
obsession with the Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH), had just written
Comfort.
My mind was churning with ways for AL to meet the EMH “for real” and, at 3:30
that morning, I had a brainstorm that forced me out of bed and to my computer to
type it out before I lost it (as my ideas have the tendency to die of
loneliness).
I assumed that Voyager resumed its duties (albeit much closer
to home) after returning from the Delta Quadrant. With that in mind, and
Comfort still swimming in my head with different kinds of scenarios for the
EMH and AL to interact, I thought that, maybe, the EMH could activate AL’s
hologram whenever he needed to speak to someone when he had to talk out his
emotions with someone who understood (such as the end of “Someone to Watch Over
Me”, for example). I also figured that he’d tell Deanna Troi and Reg Barclay
about it sometime during the episode, “Life Line”. He’d probably want to meet
her “in real life” (I mean, who wouldn’t, right? ^^) so, he’d invite her to
Voyager’s welcome home party. Naturally, she’d bring Data along.
So, the EMH eventually tells AL about his exploits with the hologram
of her, and the three become friends, to the point that AL (with and without
Data) makes frequent visits to Voyager.
AL’s timeline originally went that, in the 25th century,
after Data’s death (Star Trek: Nemesis, for her, only happened as a
nightmare), Jedi Ben (JB, a character belonging to a friend of mine and AL’s
personal thorn in her side) travels to Alnilam (where she’d retreated, unable to
cope with the loss of Data) with an isolinear chip containing a message from
Data, reminding her of her promise to become science officer on the new
starship, Victory, which Data and JB had built in secret.
Now, however, after the bite of the Muse, much of that remains the
same, except that Voyager’s EMH goes to Alnilam with JB, because the
latter had gotten the holographic doctor to be installed on the Victory,
thereby giving AL a friendly and familiar face (other than JB himself, which she
wasn’t happy about) aboard an otherwise unfamiliar ship.
This story, more or less, starts the Victory chronology in
AL’s timeline.

Chapter One:
Illegal Move, But, Checkmate!: It’s a line from Doctor Who,
episode “Silver Nemesis”, spoken by the Seventh Doctor. The line, in its
entirety, is, “End game. Illegal move, but, checkmate!” Voyager’s finale
was called “End Game” and the aforementioned line always played in my head
whenever I saw it.
“Set a course…for home.”: The last line, spoken by Captain Janeway, in the Voyager series finale, “End Game”. Also the last line spoken at the end of the Voyager premier episode, “Caretaker”, also said by Janeway.
Chapter Three:
“I haven’t been here since Jim got himself demoted.”: This happened
in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Captain Kirk was demoted from Admiral
for stealing the Enterprise, amongst other things.
Chapter Four:
“Doctor…Doctor who?”: I’m afraid I couldn’t resist the oft-spoken
line from Doctor Who.
“I once knew someone else who went by just ‘Doctor’.”: This was, of course, the Doctor from Doctor Who.
Chapter Five:
Reg Barclay’s speech: Taken from “Endgame”, slightly altered.
Babies don’t think in words: That was borrowed from one of Louis Sachar’s novels. Wayside School Gets A Little Stranger, I believe.
