Trivia and In-Jokes
About the Story:
You can blame this story completely on V. She had a plot bunny bugging her
when she read Doc Brown’s
Unencyclopedia (sort of like a fake
Wikipedia) entry, which stated he was a Time Lord. She got an idea of the
Doctor being Doc’s father, and gave the bunny to me to give a good home. I
didn’t have any idea how to work in a relationship like that, however, I had
planned on a crossover for a long time. You’ll notice that the “Day, date, time,
location” bits that are so prevalent in other Back to the Future fics are
absent in this story. I did it for
Here’s
Hopping and I found it hard to keep track of a workable timeline, so I
ditched it.
Trying to figure out a plot for this thing was very, very hard. I
went from Doc and Marty somehow ending up on Skaro prior to the events of
“Remembrance of the Daleks” (which was the original idea I had way back in 2001,
which also included the then-eight incarnations of the Doctor, resulting in
eight versions of AL as well – titled The Eight Doctors, Plus One), to
Jules needing to do a project on a historical event from England (slated
originally to be the Silvertown explosion of 1917 – titled Blast from the
Past), to a Doctor Who monster wanting to get their hands (or
plungers, as the case may be…protuberances, if you will, for the Seventh Doctor
called them that) on Doc’s time machines for their own nefarious purposes.
Choosing the monster would thereby choose which incarnation of the
Doctor I was to use. Now, I absolutely love the Daleks; they are my favorite
Doctor Who monster in the history of the show, which is why they originally
appeared in The Eight Doctors, Plus One. In fact, when I first saw the
Dalek in the preview for the 2005 episode, “Dalek”, I squealed in a very
fan-girlish way. Just ask my husband. Anyways, if I wanted to use Daleks in this
story, I could not use the Tenth and current Doctor unless I wanted to write for
Martha Jones, too, because of the events that have been happing in Season Three
of the show. If I’d chosen him without Martha (I don’t like writing for the
companions…I can’t explain why), thereby setting this story between “The Runaway
Bride” and “Smith and Jones”, I would’ve had to use the Cybermen, which are
Doctor Who’s other famous monsters. Barring the Tenth, I would’ve picked the
Eighth Doctor, set immediately after the Doctor Who Movie, as it would
only be him and AL alone.
The final idea bit me at almost 4AM on a Wednesday morning (and I
swear it left a mark…), when I, of course, could not immediately write it out
because of the need for sleep. My Muse is a thing of evil.
Dalek Caan comes to this story after the events of “Daleks in
Manhattan”/ “Evolution of the Daleks”. For Doc, AL and co., it’s one year after
Here’s Hopping. For the Doctor, Martha and AL, it’s immediately after
“Human Nature”/ “Family of Blood” and, as stated within, for the Doctor (and
AL), it’s ten years after “Resurrection of the Daleks”.
I do apologize for the short Chapter Fourteen, but, as it isn’t
known what happens to Dalek Caan in the show, yet, there was only so much I
could write. Sorry.
Title:
The Wrath of Caan: LOL okay, this is a play-on of The Wrath of
Khan, the title of Star Trek II. “Caan” is pronounced the same way.
The title never ceases to amuse me. :)
Chapter One:
Verne’s interest in animals: I suppose this is an homage to V’s
BTTX series, where her
version of Verne has the ability to speak to animals.
Big, puffy clouds: Heh, this is an in-joke around the people I used to work with.
Chapter Two:
Ka Faraq Gatri:
Translated as “the enemy of the Daleks”, mentioned in the novelization of
“Remembrance of the Daleks”.
Chapter Three:
The Doctor’s lack of memory:
In the 2007 two-parter “Human Nature”/ “Family of Blood”, the Doctor had to
become human (taking the name “John Smith”) to hide from an alien family. He
fell in love with a school nurse while Martha had to stand by and watch,
eventually getting him to restore his memories. AL also had to hide, however,
since the Family could (literally) sniff out alien beings, she had to shape
shift into something other than her natural form, so she posed as “John’s” cat
up until the end of the second episode (and, please, never, ever
mention it to her again).
Chapter Four:
The Genesis Arc: This
is a Time Lord prison ship that housed millions of Daleks, seen in the 2006
two-parter “Army of Ghosts”/ “Doomsday”.
Chapter Five:
Haunted By the Past:
It’s a title of one of
Kristen Sheley’s currently unfinished BTTF fics.
Remembering the Doctor: This was originally going to be just AL remembering the images of each of the ten Doctors, however, I wanted all thirteen (Doctors past Ten do not yet exist, however), so I decided to have quotes from each Doctor. One comes from “The Aztecs”, Two is from “The Wheel in Space” (which was, in fact, the first time the Doctor goes by the alias “John Smith”), Three is the line most associated with Jon Pertwee’s era of the show, Four is Tom Baker’s catchphrase (though one instance where it was said was “The Face of Evil”), Five is from “Castrovalva”, Six is from “The Twin Dilemma”, Seven is from “Survival”, Eight is from the Movie, Nine is from my story The Return, Ten is from “Utopia”, and the final line comes from my short story Back to Cardiff as the Doctor’s last words to AL before he died (which is, in turn, a line from the Comic Relief episode “The Curse of Fatal Death”, which I disliked).
Chapter Six:
One Small Snag: Is a line from Jonathan Creek, my other
favorite British TV show.
Cardiac ectopy: In the 1982 Doctor Who episode, “Earthshock”, the Doctor’s found on a scanner by his ectopic (read: double) heartbeat.
Chapter Nine:
The Two Doctors: The title of a 1985 episode of Doctor Who,
featuring the Sixth (Colin Baker) and Second (Patrick Troughton) Doctors. One of
my favorites, actually.
It had been a situation involving the Time Lord that took her from Hill Valley in the first place.: This is a reference to the 1986 fourteen-part Trial of a Time Lord season (specifically, “Mindwarp”, where the Doctor was first taken out of time to be put on trial and “The Ultimate Foe”, where he was reunited with Sabalom Glitz and Mel Bush – and, therefore, AL). AL was taken out of time and reunited with the Doctor minutes before the end of Back to the Future Part III.
Hell, it’s happened before.: This is in reference to the amnesia AL gained due to the Warlord attack on Alnilam, which was, in fact, also the first time she’d met the Doctor (in his First incarnation).
2:30 in the morning: That’s when I was writing it.
Nudge: Not as in “push”. It’s my word for “annoying person”. It’s pronounced slightly different, but it’s hard to explain…head to my Vocals page and listen to my recording. That should clear things up.
Knowing just how uncomfortable she felt when Aislin was insisting she return to Hill Valley a year ago: This is a reference to my story, Dreaming of You.
She also had her work cut out for her once they returned to their proper timeline: This is in reference to the later episodes of Season Three (“Utopia”, “The Sound of Drums” and “The Last of the Time Lords”, specifically), where, basically, all Hell breaks loose. :)
Chapter Ten:
Deliberately missing was hard on the Dalek, the urge to kill a powerful
one, but fighting it was nothing new.: Dalek Sec, former leader of the Cult
of Skaro, kept one of them from killing the Doctor in “Evolution of the Daleks”.
“I will be the destroyer of our greatest enemy! Exterminate!”: One of the Cult said this in “Evolution of the Daleks”.
Chapter Eleven:
That knock to the head gave me amnesia! Again!: AL first
received amnesia in a crash right when she first met the Doctor.
You gave it to me. And you will again. That’s the best part.: This is paraphrased from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, when Jim Kirk gave his glasses to a 1986 antique shop. Spock asks him if they were the glasses Dr. McCoy gave him. Jim replies, “And they will be again. That’s the beauty of it”.
Chapter Thirteen:
She remembered that he’d told her he’d always wanted to drive a train as
a boy.: This was mentioned by the Doctor in the Peter Davison episode “Black
Orchid”.
Their misadventure last year and dimension-hopping: A passing mention to Here’s Hopping.
“Ol’ John”: John DeLorean, creator of the car.
“I’m brilliant!”: The Doctor’s line from “Utopia”.
Chapter Fourteen:
The Daleks would survive. In Caan.:
This is paraphrased of the Dalek’s line in “Dalek”, which was, “The Daleks
survive in me!”
