Chapter Two: A Dangerous Duo

He was the last. He’d survived the Time War and the Ka Faraq Gatri’s meddling in the Cult’s overseeing the construction of New York’s Empire State Building, and, now, he was the last.

RL: Ka Faraq Gatri is translated as “the enemy of the Daleks”. It was mentioned in the novelization of “Remembrance of the Daleks”. Caan is referring to the events of “Daleks in Manhattan”/ “Evolution of the Daleks”.

The last of the Daleks.

Dalek Caan, second-in-command of the Cult of Skaro, was the last remaining member of his race, thanks to the enemy of the Daleks, the Time Lord known as the Doctor, the bringer of darkness. His fellow Daleks – Dalek Thay, Dalek Jast and former leader Dalek Sec – had all been exterminated.

RL: In the aforementioned two-parter.

Caan’s emergency temporal shift had taken him forward in time from 1930 New York. He was unaware of what time period he’d landed in, or where, exactly, he was.

He did know one thing, however. He was still on Earth. No other planet in the universe was this primitive.

He was in what humans would call a “junkyard”. There was every kind of trash imaginable – and that’s what the Cult was created for: imagination – and just what Caan needed.

First, he needed a slave to aid in building the technology he needed. He knew from experience that humans would react with fear if they saw him…such a flawed species.

Caan’s audio sensors picked up a disturbance approximately thirty feet away. The Dalek had to elevate over much of the debris strewn over the ground.

Rummaging through the trash was a human male, approximately late middle-age. He was mumbling and grumbling to himself. Good enough.

“Stay where you are!” Caan shouted. “Do not move!”

The human looked up sharply. “Shit!” he shouted, backing over some of the trash and tripping, falling to the ground.

“You are my prisoner! You will obey! If you do not, you will be exterminated!” Caan trained his weapon on the human. He fired a warning shot at some debris, causing a small explosion.

Humans were primitive, however, not all of them were stupid. Even if this poor excuse for a human being did have minimal brain power, he was intelligent enough to raise his hands in the intergalactic gesture for “I’m unarmed – don’t kill me”.

Doc: That might have been the smartest thing Biff had ever done.

“Slave, you will tell me current information on Earth history. Kneel before me.”

“Why?” the human demanded.

Caan wiggled his weapon. “Kneel!” he ordered.

The human was glaring, but he obeyed. Caan pressed his manipulator arm to the human’s skull and began the information download.

The year was 1994, the twenty-sixth day of the month of August. He was in the local junkyard of the small town called Hill Valley in the state known as California. Technology now wasn’t as sophisticated as Caan would have wanted, but it would have to do.

“Slave, I require mechanical components be brought to me immediately!” Caan ordered. “You will obey or be exterminated!”

If there was one thing humans had, it was a strong survival instinct. The human scurried off to bring the equipment Caan needed.

The Dalek had a plan, and his slave – Tannen his name was – was going to help him.

Doc: Biff Tannen and a Dalek…you’re not kidding that they’re a dangerous duo.
