Chapter Ten: Ambush!

Everything was ready. Dalek Caan and his slave waited outside the mine. The machinery had started emitting its signal just a few shorts minutes ago. It wouldn’t be long, now.

The plan was to trap the Doctor and his companions inside and detonate the explosives. He’d then be rid of the Time Lord forever.

Tannen’s role was to ensure they entered the shaft. If he were to be killed in the process…then Caan didn’t need him alive.

So, they waited, but it didn’t take long. The tell-tale sound of a materializing TARDIS filled the air and the time machine in question solidified just a few yards away. Out of it exited four life forms and one of them was undeniably that winged humanoid that never left the Doctor’s side. There was something wrong, however. There was only one winged humanoid. Caan was sure he’d detected two.

No matter. He could see the Doctor exit the TARDIS, as well. As long as he was rid of the Time Lord, that was enough.

Caan had to drive them towards the mine, so he circled around to the far side, then began firing. Deliberately missing was hard on the Dalek, the urge to kill a powerful one, but fighting it was nothing new.

The group below scattered. Tannen made sure they headed for the mine. Caan’s audio sensors could pick up expressions of disbelief about something.

As they entered the mine, Caan descended and he and Tannen shuttled them deeper, towards where they’d set the trap.

“You will be exterminated!” shouted Caan. “I will be the destroyer of our greatest enemy! Exterminate!”

“He’s recruited Biff…I can’t believe this!” one of them shouted.

“I can,” said another.

Caan and Tannen drove them deeper and deeper, firing enough shots to keep them moving. They were not yet close enough to be trapped in the blast.

Suddenly, they ducked away into a different tunnel.

“After them!” Caan ordered.

It was too late. The explosion rung out, collapsing the shafts, preventing any further descent into the mine, blocking the tunnel with the generator, along with the tunnel his slave had chased the group down.

Enraged, Caan fired a few shots at the mine walls, effectively caving in more of the shaft. If he didn’t turn around, now, he’d be trapped and all plans of recreating the Time Corridor would be destroyed.

He spun his casing around and exited the mine as fast as his motors could power him. He was leaving his slave behind, but it didn’t matter. With the Doctor and his companions trapped behind a wall of rocks, there would be little resistance.

End chapter ten.
