Trivia and In-Jokes

About the Story:
My Phantom of the Opera obsession came from a birthday present to my ex in May of 2004. We saw the play and I was instantly hooked. He created a monster, as it were. Anyways, I, of course, needed AL to meet Erik (our Phantom). I’d started on a story in my Story Scenes about how he returns to her at the end of the play (as the movie hadn’t come out, as of yet), but, recently, an idea of how they first met had started stewing, fueled by a dream I had of Erik being attacked and me stopping the attacker. All I needed was a reason for the mask to come off. I’d toyed with an idea of a swordfight, but figured a gun was better. My Erik is Gerard Butler’s Phantom from the movie, as I have full access to that on DVD. I did a little online research to make sure I had AL doing things that were possible in 1860 and wrote in the right kind of dress (much to her chagrin, of course).

Title:
Beyond the Stars: Is a line from Doctor Who, episode, “Timelash”.

Chapter One:
These clothes are ridiculous: A line from Doctor Who, episode, “Talons of Weng-Chiang”.

Time traveler friend: This is a reference to the Doctor from Doctor Who. At this time, AL was traveling with him, but I wanted her to meet Erik alone, so I had her just be dropped off in 19th century Paris. I didn’t mention the Doctor by name because this is a Phantom story, not a Doctor Who story, though, if you’re curious, it’s the Sixth Doctor she’s with.

Chapter Two:
Cesar: I got the name from an imdb.com entry. According to that, the horse was part of the book.

Chapter Five:
Erik’s tale of his past: Largely taken from the movie.

Chapter Six:
Get Off-A My Back!: The name of a Bryan Adams song from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

“I have never felt a kiss before…”: A line from the Wishbone episode “Pantin’ at the Opera”.

There’s no point in being grown up if you can’t be childish sometimes: From Doctor Who, episode “Robot”.

Shock tactics: Used in Doctor Who, episode “Mindwarp”.

Would you go with me?: A song by Josh Turner.

Chapter Seven:
AL and Erik not becoming linked: Don’t tell AL, but I forgot about the link. ^^; See, AL becomes linked with someone she loves who loves her in return when they kiss. I couldn’t really link AL and Erik, because it had to happen in the sequel. So, I just figured, while AL was in love with Erik, he wasn’t completely in love with her at the time of the kiss.

“All right…all right!”: From The Lion King.

Chapter Eight:
The glowing key: From the Doctor Who episode, “Father’s Day”.

Landing at the Louvre: A reference to the Doctor Who episode, “City of Death”.

“Don’t forget me” “Don’t you forget me”: It sounds familiar because the Doctor said it in the Doctor Who episode “The Hand of Fear”.

“ ’Til we meet again.”: From the same Doctor Who episode.
