Chapter Two: Adverse Weather Patterns Ahead
“Cake, food, guests…” AL was muttering to herself. “Transport, wagons, weather…” Her head snapped up. “Crap! The weather!”
At her side, Hooks glanced at her. “What about it?” he asked. “I thought it was supposed to be nice.”
“ ‘Nice’ doesn’t cut it! I want it to be perfect!” She paused, thinking. “I’ll have to go talk to Tempest and Mistral. Hold down the fort.”
“Right…” Hooks muttered as she got up and left the room.
Things had been progressing nicely. Robert, Luke, Tommy, Adam, Clark and Gary had a handle on things and, in fact, the wonderful smells wafting from the kitchen were proving to be very distracting. It took vast amounts of willpower not to hit them up for samples.
Mostly everything was set. The cake would be picked up later, Robert was fine with the food, the guests would arrive by four and she had large wagons at the ready to transport them to the house, though she still needed someone to pull them. It was the weather that was worrying her. While there were the atmospheric disturbances that had caused the winters to become much warmer than normal, things were still unpredictable and AL wanted to be sure nothing was going to stop this party from happening.
She went outside where Radu and Data were setting up large lights for when the sun went down. “Hey,” she called to them. “I’m going to see Tempest and Mistral and ask if they can help make sure the weather stays cooperative for the party. I also have to get a few of them to pull the wagons. I’ll be back.”
Without waiting for an answer, she teleported to the large meadow where the unicorns gathered. Scanning the crowd, she spotted them by the stream. “Tempest, Mistral!” she shouted, jogging over to them.
The two winged unicorns looked up and whickered a greeting. “Hello, Lisa,” said Tempest. “How are the party preparations?”
“Great, though I hit one small snag: the weather. I’d like your help so it stays perfect, even when the sun goes down.”
“Sure,” Mistral agreed readily.
“Certainly,” said Tempest.
“Awesome.” A breeze picked up, ruffling the feathers of their wings. She pursed her lips, thinking. “Uh…would you two mind some help? I really need this party to go well.”
The father-daughter pair exchanged a look and smiled that strange unicorn smile. “Sure.”
“Great! Now I have to find a few of you to pull those wagons…”
AL proceeded to look around for the unicorns that were large enough for the task. It wasn’t a question of strength; near all of them were strong enough. It was more that the wagons were very large and it would look silly if someone like tiny Hermes would be pulling them. She chose Medicus by default since he pulled things regularly. Daystar was also big enough, as was Quade.
That decided, she shouted, “Medicus, Daystar and Quade, ’mere!”
The three stallions trotted up to her. “Yes, Lisa?” said Medicus.
“I need you three to pull the wagons for the party. The guests are gonna arrive by four.”
“Of course,” said Quade.
“No problem,” agreed Daystar.
“Always ready to help,” concluded Medicus.
“Awesome. Meet me at the Gate in a few hours.”
